Manoj Kumar passes away: Unke lungs mein paani bhar jata tha aur….: Aruna Irani remembers the 'Upkar' actor

The Indian film industry is mourning the loss of legendary actor, filmmaker, and patriot of cinema, Manoj Kumar . Among the many heartfelt tributes pouring in, veteran actress Aruna Irani shared an emotional remembrance of her mentor and frequent co-star. With tears in her eyes, she recalled their cherished moments together, calling him “her guru” and “a true gentleman.”
A Mentor, A Guide, A Legend
Speaking exclusively to ETimes, Aruna Irani expressed her sorrow, reminiscing about her long association with Manoj Kumar. “He was my guru. I did my first film, ' Upkar ', with him, and he was a true gentleman—a great actor, director, and producer. His wife was also a wonderful person, and we received special care during the filming of his movies. I was part of almost all his films. If he did ten films, I was in at least nine of them,” she shared.
Having worked together in numerous films, Aruna Irani fondly remembered the camaraderie they shared on set. “He was an amazing person with a beautiful heart. When we enjoy working with someone, we remember them not just for their work but also for the time spent together.”
His Final Days and Their Last Connection
Acknowledging his prolonged illness, she reflected on the inevitability of time. “One cannot go against time and age. He had been unwell for a long time. A couple of months ago, I was admitted to the same hospital after fracturing my leg, and he was there too. But I couldn't meet him because of my injury,” she recalled with regret.
She also shared a painful detail about his declining health: “Unke lungs mein paani bhar jata tha (fluid would accumulate in his lungs), and he used to come for treatment, stay for a few days, and then go back home.”
With a heavy heart, she concluded, “I hope he rests in peace. We will miss him dearly, but in the end, we all have to go one day.”
A Legacy That Lives On
Manoj Kumar, known as Bharat Kumar for his iconic patriotic roles, gave Indian cinema some of its most memorable films, including ‘Upkar’, ‘Purab Aur Paschim’, and ‘Kranti’. His contribution to the industry remains unparalleled, and his films will continue to inspire generations.
As Aruna Irani and countless others bid him a tearful goodbye, Manoj Kumar’s legacy as a mentor, filmmaker, and true patriot of Indian cinema will forever remain alive in the hearts of movie lovers.
