Indian celebrities and Indian politics do not exist in isolation of each other despite the contrast. Several actors express strong political stance and many have even become MPs and quit acting as well. In the history of Indian there remains one name who had the courage to take a stance against the ruling government and even won.
This actor was man of many hats. He never shied away from expressing his view despite how contrasting it may be. He knew how to stand his ground and epitomised the phrase - action speak louder than word- when he stood up against Indira Gandhi in 1975. In 1975 India was in a state of upheaval and political instability. The then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had imposed Emergency.
Several actors came in opposition to the idea. One of them was Manoj Kumar who was admirably assigned the moniker as Bharat Kumar owing to his deep sense of patriotism that was also depicted in his films.

In an interview with The Sunday Guardian Manoj Kumar opened up about this and said “During the Emergency I was asked to direct a documentary written by the famous writer Amrita Pritam. It was based on a plot supporting the Emergency. I even received a special phone call from the country’s Information and Broadcasting Ministry to direct it.”
He further added “I refused to do so and later action was taken against me. My films were gradually banned from Doordarshan but I did not give up and filed a court case against the government. After a lot of struggle I won and my decision was proved right.”
Following Kumar’s uproar the I&B Ministry also banned another one of his films Dus Numbri. However the film was eventually released in 1976 and became a superhit.
