Kolkata: The husband left a housewife disabled after an accident at a multi-speciality hospital and after she did not return even after two years, Apollo Multi Speciality Hospital has now moved court for a bill of crores of rupees. In connection with the case, Amherst police arrested the woman's husband and produced him in court, where he expressed his helplessness in court and said that he is not able to take care of her.
After the accident, the woman lost her speech and the lower part of her body became completely paralyzed. Here, the husband, who appeared in the court in connection with the case, was asked by Judge Amrita Sinha why he did not take his wife home. In response, the husband said that he is a shop owner and does not have the necessary equipment to take care of his disabled wife.
Here, the lawyer of Apollo Hospital while speaking to the court said that the hospital treated her for two years, did several surgeries on her and her insurance amount of Rs 6 lakh was exhausted long ago. Currently Rs 1 crore is outstanding and the lawyer told the court that the hospital can no longer take responsibility of the patient.
Meanwhile, the hospital counsel alleged in the court that the woman's husband has started a new family. However, Justice Sinha did not interfere in the family's case. The state counsel argued that there are shelters in the state that provide free services. But the staff at the state-run shelters do not have the expertise to take care of sick patients.
Regarding this matter, Justice Sinha directed the Advocate General to appear for the hearing on April 9 and state whether the state has any controls for such people and suggest a solution. The court directed that the husband will also have to appear in court on that day.
According to sources, the 40-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital by her husband in September 2021 after suffering a head injury. Several surgeries, including neurosurgery, were performed to save the woman's life. But she survived, but the injury left her unable to walk. Despite her condition being stable, her husband Jaiprakash Gupta refused to take her home.
In connection with the matter, the hospital called Gupta several times, but on not receiving any response, the hospital approached the West Bengal Clinical Establishment Control Commission in May last year. After Gupta failed to appear before the health committee inquiry, Justice (Retd) Asim Kumar Banerjee told Apollo that it was appropriate to approach the courts.
Currently, the woman is kept on a normal bed in the hospital's neurosurgery department, being attended to by nurses on a rotational basis. Hats off to our nurses who treat them like their own relatives even though the injury has rendered them immobile. But a hospital official said that this woman needs the love and care of her family.
