New Delhi: Pakistans disastrous tour of New Zealand concluded with not only a third consecutive ODI loss but also a heated altercation involving all-rounder Khushdil Shah who clashed with mocking fans at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui on Saturday. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) later released a statement acknowledging the incident and supporting their players response pointing to verbal abuse and anti-Pakistan chants from a group of foreign spectators reportedly Afghan. Following Pakistans 43-run loss in the final ODI which capped off a tough tour that saw them lose the T20I series 1-4 and the ODI series 0-3 Khushdil approached a section of the crowd. While the exact cause remains unclear video clips and eyewitness accounts indicate that the fans repeatedly taunted the team over their poor results pushing the 30-year-old cricketer to his breaking point. The situation quickly spiraled as Khushdil appeared to charge towards the group before being held back by his teammates and support staff. The Pakistan team management strongly condemns the abusive language directed at national players. Khushdil Shah intervened after hearing anti-Pakistan slogans but the situation escalated due to inappropriate remarks in Pashto the PCB said. The offending spectators were eventually ejected after an official complaint from the Pakistani side. The incident overshadowed another disappointing performance on the field. Chasing 265 in a rain-affected 42-over match Pakistan struggled to gain any momentum. Babar Azam’s 50 and Mohammad Rizwan’s quick 37 provided some brief optimism but the rest of the batting line-up faltered under pressure undone by New Zealands disciplined bowling particularly Ben Sears who took his second consecutive five-wicket haul. Khushdil Shah later explained to Telecom Asia Sport from New Zealand that his reaction was triggered after an individual began insulting Pakistan. They were criticizing players and the team but when they started abusing my countryy I got angry and went to this man but he did not stop. It was only after that I confronted him said Khushdil. Images shared on social media depicted Khushdil being held back by Pakistans reserve player Irfan Khan and a police officer as he attempted to confront the fan hurling insults. A significant number of Pakistani supporters were present at the Bay Oval but they were disheartened by their team’s underwhelming performance.
