Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is on a three-day visit to France, on Tuesday sought democratisation of technology, pointing out that AI is the code for humanity in this century.

Speaking as the co-chair at the AI Action Summit along with French President Emmanuel Macron, Modi said AI is altering the polity, economy, security and society.

PM Modi said it is important to ensure access for all, including the Global South, adding that it can transform millions of lives in sectors like healthcare, education and agriculture. He also cautioned against deepfakes and disinformation, adding that it is important to build bias-free quality data centres.

Pointing out that it is very different from other technological milestones in human history, developing at an unprecedented scale.

However, he dismissed worries about unemployment because of AI, recalling how historically technology created new types of jobs. He said the world should invest in skilling and re-skilling citizens to prepare them for a future dominated by AI.

“We must pull together our resources and talent and develop open source systems that enhance trust and transparency and develop quality datasets free from biases in order to benefit the world,” Modi added.

Modi said India is building its own large language model by taking into account its diversity. “We are developing AI apps for public good and have one of the world’s largest AI talent pools,” he added.

During his visit, the Prime Minister will also address the India-France CEO’s Forum. On Wednesday, Modi will pay homage to Indian soldiers who were martyred during World War I. He will also inaugurate the Consulate General of India in Marseille before leaving for the US.
