New Delhi: Large vehicles and luxurious homes people living with great opulence can be found in every city of the country. There is also a plethora of such people in the country who run big businesses. Looking at them it seems that among the countrys nearly 1.4 billion population a few million people must be earning more than one crore rupees every year.
However the income tax return figures available on the income tax departments website tell a different story. According to the latest data available on the income tax departments website only 324000 income tax returns (ITR) with an annual income of Rs 1 crore or more have been filed as of March 31 2025. This means that only this many people have acknowledged that their annual income exceeds one crore rupees.
If we include companies firms trusts HUFs government and local bodies in this count the figure reaches 4.68 lakh. By March 31 2025 a total of 9.19 crore ITRs have been filed of which 8.64 crore returns have been e-verified.
Of the total 3.24 lakh people with higher income the majority which is 2.97 lakh had an income between Rs 1 crore and Rs 5 crore. Meanwhile the number of people earning between Rs 5 crore and Rs10 crore was 16797 and those earning more than Rs 10 crore was recorded as 10184.
When combining companies firms trusts HUFs government and local bodies the number of people earning more than one crore annually rises to 4.68 lakh. Among these 3.89 lakh fall within the Rs 1-5 crore income bracket over 36000 are between Rs 5-10 crore and more than 43000 return filers earn above Rs 10 crore.
