Taking advantage of the opportunity, Bangladesh has proposed a bilateral meeting between PM Modi and Professor Yunus on the sideline. Bangladesh Foreign Secretary Mohammad Jashim Uddin recently said that this meeting can prove to be helpful in reducing the existing tension between the two countries.
For the last few months, tension has been seen in relations between India and Bangladesh. Especially after the fall of Sheikh Hasina's government in August 2024 and Yunus became the head of the interim government. India has expressed concern over attacks on Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh. While Bangladesh has questioned Sheikh Hasina in India. In such a situation, this meeting can be an opportunity for both countries to negotiate mutual issues. Sources say that if this meeting takes place then it will be a positive step for regional stability and cooperation.
Professor Yunus is currently active internationally. He was on a visit to China on 26-29 March before the BIMSTEC conference. Where he met President Xi Jinping. Now in Thailand, he is also preparing to receive the chairmanship of BIMSTEC as Bangladesh will become the next president of this organization after this conference. In such a situation, the curiosity about his meeting with PM Modi has increased.
Although India has not yet made any official statement on this meeting, but experts believe that there may be at least one informal conversation between the two leaders. All the leaders will be on one platform during the BIMSTEC conference. Due to which the possibility of a brief meeting cannot be ruled out. This meeting can be important not only for Indo-Bangladesh relations but also for the entire region.
