Back in the era before social media ruled stardom the success of a film was measured by the number of footfalls and crowds it pulled in theatres and dominated the box office. One such example of this was a film that was led by a superhit cast of Jeetendra Sridevi and Jaya Prada. The emotional drama turned out to be a massive hit that not only changed the career trajectory of Jeetendra but also threatened the dominance of actors like Dharmendra Amitabh Bachchan and Rajesh Khanna. A re-defining film in Jeetendras career Directed by Kovelamudi Raghavendra Rao The name of this film was Tohfa. It not only strengthened Jeetendra’s position in the industry but also earned him the nickname “Jumping Jack” for his energetic dance moves. The films enormous success made him star in the pioneer category of actors. Performing 15 times better than its budget the film has collected over ₹141 crore today which collected ₹9 crore at the box office in 1984 The Plot - Sisterhood and Sacrifice The storyline of the film talks about the emotional conflict between two sisters who have love for the same man.  When one sister - Lalita (acted by Jaya Prada) sees her sister loving the same person she takes a backstep and lets go of her own love. This overwhelming concept of sacrifice love and family strongly touched the Indian audiences. Record-Breaking Remake Adapted from Telugu blockbuster Tohfa was a remake of Devatha released in 1982. Even though it was a remake it created its own niche in Hindi cinema. The film received nominations for Best Comic Actor Best Music and Best Lyrics at the 32nd Filmfare Awards—further boosting its popularity. Star Power and Cult Status Along with Jeetendra the movie included powerhouse performances from Sridevi and Jaya Prada who very soon became  fans favourites. The dialogues of the film particularly one-liners by Shakti Kapoor such as the iconic Lalita became so famous that the actor went ahead and named his chain of restaurants after the name of the film character in 2017. Released in a Landmark Year The same year when Tohfa was released it also witnessed a follow-up of other blockbusters with leading stars—Rajesh Khanna in Dharam Aur Kanoon and Awaaz Dharmendra in Raj Tilak and Amitabh Bachchan in Sharabi and Inquilaab. However Tohfa still surpassed them all emerging as the biggest hit of the year and creating a new record in Jeetendras career. Tohfa was just not a movie but it was an event that refined Jeetendra career It rose him to such a stardom that became a game-changer for his hierarchy and left a legacy that continues to be felt. Even after decades it remains unforgettable.
