In the current Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill received accolades from former cricketers Mark Boucher and Aakash Chopra for his captain’s innings, which led his team to a comfortable seven-wicket win over a struggling Sunrisers Hyderabad. They were talking on JioHotstar’s Match Centre Live.

After outperforming the Sunrisers in Hyderabad with a strong all-around effort and chasing down a meager 153-run target with a few overs remaining, Gujarat secured a hat-trick of victories in the current tournament.

Former Mumbai Indians head coach Boucher was pleased with Gill’s composure throughout the chase as Gujarat continues to project dominance and make steady progress toward strengthening its playoff challenge.

They will take a lot of heart from this one as well, and they’re sitting nicely right now. Nowadays, it’s difficult to win away from home, particularly the manner they did. They performed the task much better than I believed the Sunrisers to have done; they were quite convincing with the ball. On Kuhl Fans Match Centre Live on JioHotstar, Boucher said, “They got a little lost up front, but then the captain (Shubman Gill) came through and played a fantastic captain’s knock.”

“Despite losing a few wickets around him, he never gave the impression that he was in any kind of panic. You should focus more on the number of runs and the composure with which he batted than on the run pace. “He will be thrilled with this one, especially away from home,” he said, “because it was a great captain’s innings.”

Gill remained unfazed and used a variety of blows from his arsenal despite Mohammed Shami and Hyderabad captain Pat Cummins shaking Gujarat’s top order early on. He returned undefeated after hitting the game-winning run on 61 off 43 pitches, arriving at a respectable strike rate of 141.86.

The former cricket player turned analyst Aakash Chopra feels that the significance of such a performance in T20 innings is sometimes underestimated, even though Gill led GT to its third straight victory and left Hyderabad speechless.

“You must serve as the anchor. Because there are so many shots being made throughout a T20 innings, we sometimes underestimate the significance of an anchor. You’re psychologically pursuing a goal of 220 or more, especially when you’re batting first. Now, however, when you’re trying to keep everything on the ground while chasing a lower total in the second innings on a field that’s slowing down a little and you lose two early wickets, you need this type of knock,” he remarked.

Aakash detailed Gill’s development as a hitter in the format and noted that he recently added the sweep stroke to his repertoire, which enables him to succeed in the opening position.
“You don’t want to take risks too often. Shubman Gill is making tremendous progress.

His arsenal now includes the sweep shot, something he didn’t employ before. He has a stunning shot from the inside out. Ultimately, it’s more than simply the two points they took away from this match,” he said.
