In a move that will affect millions of households across India, the Government of India has announced a ₹50 increase in the price of domestic LPG cylinders. The new rates will be applicable from Tuesday, April 8, 2025, as confirmed by Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri.
New Price: ₹853 per cylinder
Old Price: ₹803 per cylinder
Effective Date: April 8, 2025
The price hike comes after several months of stability, with the last revision in domestic LPG prices occurring in August 2024.
Speaking on the price hike, Minister Puri stated that the reduction in LPG prices under the Ujjwala Yojana has led to a loss of ₹41,338 crore for the government. He emphasized that Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) have been absorbing the rising cost of LPG in the international market for quite some time.
Now, due to increasing global LPG prices, the government has decided to raise rates to balance the losses.
Despite the hike, beneficiaries under the PM Ujjwala Yojana will continue to receive subsidized LPG cylinders. After the new revision:
Ujjwala LPG Price: ₹553 per cylinder
This subsidy aims to ensure continued affordability for economically weaker households.
The minister noted that LPG prices in the global market have been rising steadily, prompting this domestic adjustment. Alongside this, the government has also announced a ₹2/litre increase in excise duty on petrol and diesel, citing similar global trends.

If international crude oil prices stabilize near $60 per barrel, the government may consider future fuel price cuts. However, for now, rising global LPG and oil prices are making domestic fuel and energy costlier.
