Actress Joanne Froggatt gave an insight into the upcoming movie. On Monday night, the star appeared on and spoke to presenters and
Alex couldn't help but asked about the last instalment of the period drama as she told viewers it comes out in September. She asked: "Are you ready to say goodbye?"
Joanne replied: "Oh my goodness, it's going to be hard! We've said goodbye a few times, thinking, 'This is the end', at the end of the seasons. Then we did one movie and we wondered if we'd get a second movie.
"This really is, the third and final, so this really is goodbye. It's going to be emotional, but all good things must come to an end, I suppose."
Joanne is known for her role as Anna Bates on the ITV period drama, who featured in the series when it first aired in 2010.
The actress played Anna until the show came to an end in 2015. However, she also starred in both films, with the first being released in 2019, four years after the show ended.
As she confirmed this is the last time Downton Abbey fans will see the cast on-screen again, BBC host Gethin Jones was keen to find out more. He asked if she was allowed to give away any teasers.
Joanne replied: "Look, I think I can say Anna, my character, is pregnant because I was pregnant when we were filming and there's been pictures out there, so that's one spoiler."
Although it seemed as though Gethin wasn't aware of this as he was visibly shocked by her admission. Joking, Joanne added: "I wrote my own storyline there!"
Downton Abbey fans were thrilled last year when Imelda Staunton hinted a final movie was on the way. Since then, it's been revealed the highly-anticipated film will be called, Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale.
Last week, an official poster was released on Instagram by Downton Abbey's account, showing Lady Mary Crawley (Michelle Dockery) walking through a corridor of Highclere Castle.
It wasn't long before people commented on the image, sharing their thoughts on the upcoming final film. One person said: "NOO [sic] You simply must do prequels!!"
Another wrote: "Goodbye? Why? I hope the series doesn't end on a horrible note e.g with the family selling the estate." Someone else commented: "Mp, we need another full series set in the 1930s- they had the best fashion."
One hopeful fan added: "Goodbye to the movies? Maybe hello to a continuing series?" Someone else commented: "This will feel like saying goodbye to a dear friend."
The One Show is available to watch on BBC iPlayer and Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale is set to be released on 12 September 2025
