Located amidst the serene waters of Lake Pichola there lies a gem which holds decades-long history — The City Palace of Udaipur. The palace is more than a monument of architectural grandeur but also holds the symbol of Rajputana glory. Maintaining that legacy Maharana Prataps descendant Lakshyaraj Singh Mewar has turned into the dynamic torchbearer of the 1500-year-old House of Mewar after his father His Highness Shriji Arvind Singh Mewars demise. With a deep-rooted heritage Lakshyaraj Singh Mewar holds a strong sense of responsibility in terms of preserving the true essence of Rajput history — a sentiment often challenged by Bollywood’s portrayal of warriors. In a recent conversation with India.com Shriji Huzur Dr. Lakshyaraj opened up about his thoughts and opinion on Bollywoods portrayal of Rajput warriors. When asked that some Bollywood period dramas sometimes have factual inaccuracies and they end up hurting the sentiments of people Lakshyaraj responded by saying Yeh vishay manoranjan ke nahi hai. Yeh jo humara pujinye hai (referring to Maharana Pratap Singh) yeh manoranjan ka vishay nahi hai. Yeh siksha aur seekh ka vishay hai. Iske upar jo hai hum log theater halls mei baith ke manoranjan kare yeh gawara nahi hai. Yeh darshan ka vishay hai pradarshan ka nahi — yeh hume samajhna padega. Aur jo filme inn soch ke sath banti hai kyuki what is story ultimately — something which is created and given birth to by an individual with his own imagination. Kalpanic hai fictional hai lekin yeh (referring to Maharana Pratap Singh) sachchai hai. Logo ko ek kalpanik cheez ke beech mein aur sachai ke beech mein farak mehsoos karna padega kyuki warriors ne apni jaan di hai aur iss wajah se nahi di ki kal log unko ek manoranjan ke vishay ke taur par dekhe. (These topics are not for entertainment. Someone like Maharana Pratap is our revered figure and his sacrifices are not meant for entertainment. The topics should purely be based on learnings. His life is something to be reflected upon not just performed or dramatised — and that distinction needs to be understood. People should understand the thin line between ‘based on real stories’ and ‘inspired by real stories’ because these warriors have lost their lives for the country — not because they should be used as a topic of entertainment on the big screens.) He added Haan isse hum prerit hoke kuch kalpanik banayein toh beshak par kyuki humko woh cheez pasand aa gayi toh humare paas creative license ka jhanda hai — usko hum pherate rahein aur usse koi cheez bana dein toh yeh theek nahi hai. Toh hume kahin na kahin jazbaaton ki ehmiyat karni chahiye — yeh zaroori hai. (Yes you like something and are inspired by it and want to make something of your own — thats completely okay. But just because you have the banner of creative license it doesn’t mean we should exploit it and make anything. It’s important that we value people’s emotions and sentiments.) Later when we asked whether filmmakers should talk to descendants like Lakshyaraj Singh Mewar before making period dramas for better portrayal of warriors the Indian Prince said These are not topics for films but for documentaries. These are not topics which should be used for movies or entertainment. Because eventually the persons own creativity wants to flow in they want to twist and turn certain things and things go wrong and completely below the belt and hurt sentiments. Why are we taking such a subject in the first place? He further added When you want to make something you have a real story to be inspired by and create something of your own. Why try and portray that as a real story when it’s not? What are we doing? We are misleading people today. Aren’t we ethically and morally responsible within ourselves not to mislead our country and our people as far as history is concerned? That sense of responsibility needs to come from within us. And it is a powerful medium — it cannot be taken lightly at all. While concluding he said Kyuki yeh (movies) asar karti hai audience par. Koi bhi jakar kuch dekh lega aur jab unhe haqiqat sanskriti ke baare mein bataya jaega toh woh insaan jakar bolega ki — Nahi maine toh film hall mein kuch aur dekha tha and woh sahi hai. Ab yeh alag behes chidh jaati hai. Toh ab yeh kahaan tak jaayaz hai? (It is important to realise that movies have a strong impact on the audience. If someone watches the film and learns about the actual history and culture later they might say No I saw something else in the theatre — that must be true. As a result this leads to an entirely different debate. So the question is — how justified is that?)
