Murshidabad: A few cops and several others were injured after several protesters gathered here against the Waqf (Amendment) law in Jangipur and hurled stones at the police. The crowd also torched police vehicles, after which the cops resorted to lathicharge and tear gas shells. An officer said a few police personnel were injured in the incident.
The officer said a few persons have been detained in connection with the violence. The authorities suspected the internet connectivity in the region to prevent the spread of any disinformation, reported PTI.
The Parliament had recently passed the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, which later got the President's assent and became a law. Several petitions have been filed in the Supreme Court against the law, and a hearing on it will take place on April 15.

West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose condemned the incident and said attempts to disturb the law and order situation in the state "should be put down with an iron hand". He also directed the state government to take "bold action" to curb violence and submit a report.

Hours after the incident, a senior police officer said the situation in Muslim-dominated Murshidabad was calm and peaceful on Wednesday, with no report of any untoward incident. However, the officer added, prohibitory orders were clamped in and arouthe nd Raghunathganj and Suti police station areas.

A large police force remains deployed in all sensitive areas of the district, especially in and around Jangipur town, where the violence took place.
"The situation is calm, peaceful and under control. There is not a single untoward incident reported from anywhere in the district. Prohibitory orders remained and would continue till 6 pm on April 10 (Thursday). The suspension of internet connectivity would also remain till 6 pm of April 11 (Friday)," the officer said, quoted PTI.
