New Delhi: Tahawwur Rana, a key accused in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, is expected to arrive in India shortly after being extradited from the United States, according to reports. A multi-agency team has been dispatched to escort the Pakistani-origin Canadian national, who is expected to face trial for his alleged role in one of India’s deadliest terror attacks.

The development follows India’s assurance to the US regarding Rana’s safety in custody. Rana’s legal team had previously raised concerns over possible torture and access to legal aid. As per a report by News18, US authorities also sought clarity on security arrangements at the Tihar Jail, where Rana is likely to be lodged during the course of his trial.

What Happens After Rana's Arrival In India?

Upon arrival his in India, Tahawwur Rana is likely to be produced before the special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court at Patiala House in Delhi. The NIA is expected to seek his custodial interrogation. Tight security measures have reportedly been put in place at both the NIA headquarters and Tihar Jail to ensure safe handling of the high-profile accused.

The NIA had also filed a charge sheet against Rana in December 2011, naming him alongside David Headley and six others in connection with the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks that claimed 164 lives, including six Americans. The charge sheet comprises 134 witness statements, 210 documents, and 106 emails, including one where David Headley’s wife allegedly “congratulated” him “for his graduation” and added she had “seen the show (broadcast of the terror attack) all day.”

What Are the Charges Against Rana?

Rana is accused of facilitating travel documents for David Headley, who conducted reconnaissance missions of key targets later attacked in Mumbai. The NIA’s investigation claims that Rana, who was allegedly associated with terror outfits Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Harakat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami (HuJI), joined the conspiracy in 2005 and was in close contact with Pakistan-based operatives.

Rana allegedly provided logistical and financial support to Headley, helping him scout “predetermined targets” and explore new potential sites for the attack. The NIA suggests he had detailed knowledge of the 26/11 plot and would be questioned on his visits to multiple Indian cities, including Hapur, Delhi, Agra, Kochi, Ahmedabad, and Mumbai, between November 13 and 21, 2008, just days before the attacks unfolded.

During the investigation, the NIA uncovered multiple email addresses used by Headley and Rana to conceal their communication. “Haidergillani1@hotmail.com” was reportedly Headley’s primary contact, while Rana used “tahawwur@yahoo.com” and “immigration@ameritechi.net.”

As per reports, officials intend to confront Rana with this digital evidence during questioning. His cooperation, or lack thereof, could be pivotal in piecing together the larger network and planning behind the coordinated strikes in Mumbai.
