Begusarai: Union Minister Giriraj Singh criticised RJD leader and Bihar LoP Tejashwi Yadav on Thursday for his remarks about the Waqf (Amendment) Act, claiming that Yadav is opposed to the impoverished Pasmanda Muslims and does not want them to get their rights.

“The whole nation abides by the laws that the Parliament passes. The whole nation owns the Parliament. The impoverished Pasmanda Muslims are opposed by Tejashwi Yadav. He opposes women’s rights and the rights of underprivileged Muslims. Singh reminded reporters that the purpose of this bill is to provide rights to women and impoverished Muslims, not to Tejashwi Yadav’s contractors.

On April 16, 2025, the Supreme Court will consider a number of petitions contesting the legality of the Waqf (Amendment) Act.

Nonetheless, the Supreme Court received intervention arguments in favour of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, arguing that the changes align with the Indian Constitution’s framework.

In addition, the Central government submitted a caveat application to the Supreme Court, requesting that it consider the government’s arguments in the cases that were submitted to it contesting the legality of the Waqf (Amendment) Act.

Tejashwi Yadav vehemently opposed the Waqf (Amendment) Bill earlier on April 5, saying it would be “thrown in the dustbin” if his party were to regain control of Bihar.

Yadav denounced the law while speaking to media in Patna, saying, “We will form the government and throw this (Waqf Amendment Bill) in the dustbin.”

Additionally, Yadav said that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will only maintain its partnership with Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar until the October 2025 state assembly elections.

“Nitish Kumar will remain with the BJP till the elections. We and the people of Bihar are well aware of what would happen to him after that,” he said.

Following contentious discussions in both Houses, Parliament enacted the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which President Droupadi Murmu signed into law on April 5.
