EPFO i.e. Employees Provident Fund Organization has made its digital services easier and safer. Now the employed workers will be able to generate and activate their UAN (Universal Account Number) through Face Authentication Technology.
This technology is completely digital and contactless, which will benefit crores of employees. Now employees can create UAN themselves through the Umang app and that too with face authentication technology. Neither the employer is going to be needed in this process, nor will there be any paperwork hassle.
What was the process till now?
Till now the responsibility of creating UAN was of the employer. They used to send the employee's data to EPFO, which was verified with Aadhaar. But many times mistakes were made in this, such as the father's name or mobile number being entered incorrectly, the employee not getting the information of UAN, and confusion created by the OTP process of activating UAN.
According to the report, out of the 1.26 crore UANs created in the financial year 2024-25, only 35% could be activated. In such a situation, employees have been facing problems later. They have to face delays in claims. Also, there is a need to update the data. Now there will be no problem.

How to generate UAN yourself?
Download the Umang App. If you want, you can also use the AadhaarFaceRD App.
Open the Umang App and select 'UAN Allotment and Activation' here.
Enter your Aadhaar number and the mobile number linked to it.
Verify with OTP.
Now turn on the camera - take a live photo (border green means OK)
The photo will be matched with Aadhaar data.
As soon as it is successful, UAN will be generated and activated.
You will get your UAN through SMS.
You can download your e-UAN card from the Umang App or portal.

Strong security
Face authentication is considered more secure than OTP or other identification processes. This will make the method of identification in EPFO completely tamper-proof. In the future, many more services can be availed yourself, in which there will be no need to contact the EPFO office or employer.
It has been told that those old members who have UAN but it is not activated, can now easily activate UAN through face authentication through Umang App.
Message given to employers.
EPFO has sent a message to employer companies to adopt this new process and help in UAN generation of new employees. This will enable registration to be done on time and correctly.
EPFO is soon going to link Jeevan Pramaan (Digital Life Certificate) with face authentication with the help of youth volunteers of MY Bharat. This will enable pensioners to get service from home.
