After defeating Ye Hong Wei and Nicole Chan of Taipei, China, in a thrilling match on Thursday, Indian mixed doubles duo Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto advanced to the quarterfinals of the Badminton Asia Championships 2025.
At the Ningbo Olympic Sports Centre Gymnasium, the Indian team defeated the Taipei pair 12-21, 21-16, 21-18. The Indian team rallied to win the second game 21-16 and win a close final 21-18 after losing the first game 12-21.
To advance to the semifinals, the Indians will next take on Hong Kong’s Tse Ying Suet and Jordan Tang, the fifth seeds.
Ace shuttler PV Sindhu, Priyanshu Rajawat, and Kiran George all lost their second-round matches, ending India’s chances of winning the singles tournament.
Despite a valiant effort, Sindhu fell to Akane Yamaguchi 11-21, 21-16, 16-21 after rallying from a deficit in the second set to take on the former world champion from Japan.
In the men’s singles, Priyanshu fell to Kodai Naraoka 14-21, 17-21, while Kiran fought valiantly against world champion Kunlavut Vitidsarn but lost 21-19, 13-21, 16-21.
Later in the day, the Malaysian duo of Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik, who won the bronze at the Olympics in Paris, will face Hariharan Amsakarunan and Ruban Kumar Rethinasabapathi, who advanced to the second round after defeating Madhuka Dulanjana and Lahiru Weerasinghe of Sri Lanka. Earlier in the competition, Malvika Bansod, HS Prannoy, and Paris 2024 semifinalist Lakshya Sen were eliminated in the first round.
After losing in straight games against Chinese Taipei’s Lee Chia-hao, ranked 14th in the world, Sen was knocked out. Despite his best efforts, Prannoy lost to Lu Guangzu of China 21-16, 12-21, 21-11, his fourth first-round loss in six events this year.
World No. 15 Gao Fang Jie defeated Malvika, who is ranked 22nd in the women’s singles rankings. The silver medallist from the Asian Games defeated her 21-14, 21-8.
In another match, Chinese Taipei’s Sung Shuo-yun and Yu Chien-Hui defeated Priya Konjengbam and Shruti Mishra 21-11, 21-13, ending India’s bid in the women’s doubles.
