China bans Hollywood film imports in retaliation to U.S. tariffs

China has resolved to halt the importation of Hollywood films due to the trade war with the United States. This comes after the current U.S. President Donald Trump increased tariffs on Chinese products, and China responded by taking retaliatory measures against American films.

The People’s Republic of China has, for the past 30 years, been importing approximately 10 Hollywood films per annum. Still, China’s National Film Administration (NFA) stated recently that the newly imposed tariffs would reduce Chinese people’s demand for U.S. films. Due to this fact, China opted to decrease American movies being introduced into the nation, and to limit them further.

Pundits speculate that the effect of this ban on the financial front will be minimal. In past years, Hollywood revenues within China’s box office have decreased, which means that the ban might not hit the American film industry as severely as anticipated.

In a statement published on its official website, the NFA justified that it would adhere to market principles, observe the audience’s viewing habits, and lower the import volume of American films to China moderately. The action demonstrates the way the current trade war between the two nations is now extending to the entertainment sector, demonstrating that cultural exchange is also impacted by political and economic conflicts.
