The total number of investor accounts on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) crossed 22 crore this month, a rapid increase of more than 2 crore accounts within just six months of crossing the 20 crore mark in October 2024, the announcement was made on Friday.
In addition, the number of unique registered investors is 11.3 crore (till 31 March, 2025) on January 20, 2025 after crossing the 11 crore mark. An investor can keep accounts with various brokers, resulting in several client codes.
Maharashtra leads the highest investor accounts, where there are 3.8 crore accounts, followed by Uttar Pradesh (2.4 crore), Gujarat (1.9 crore) and Rajasthan and West Bengal. These states have about 49 percent of the total accounts, while the top 10 states contribute about three-fourths of the total accounts.
In the last five years, the benchmark Nifty 50 index has given a strong annual return of 22 per cent, while the Nifty 500 index has given an annual return of 25 per cent, which reflects significant assets creation for investors during this period. NSE investor Safety Fund (IPF) increased by more than 23 percent to Rs 2,459 crore on a annual basis by 31 March 2025. NSE Chief Business Development Officer Shriram Krishnan said, “India's investor Aadhaar is growing rapidly, more than 2 crore new accounts have been added in just six months – despite the global economic obstacles, a clear reflection of strong investor trust in India's development path”.
This boom is inspired by quick digital changes and increasing use of mobile trading, which has made the capital market more accessible for investors in Tier 2, 3 and 4 cities. Krishnan said that this growth also highlights the success of the initiatives centered to deepen retail participation, including comprehensive financial literacy programs and well -organized KYC procedures.
According to the recently released data by NSE, the market capitalization of NSE-list companies reached Rs 410.87 lakh crore ($ 4.81 trillion) in FY 2025 (till 31 March), which was Rs 384.2 lakh crore ($ 4.61 trillion) in FY 2024-which is 6.94 percent year-on-year. The total number of companies listed on NSE was 2,720 (till 31 March, 2025).
