The alleged “maltreatment and arrest” of a serving Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) and his spouse by police officers from the Telhara Police Station in Bihar has drawn harsh criticism from the Indian Army. It said that the Army’s intervention had resulted in the JCO’s release.
The JCO, who was on leave, and his wife were reportedly hauled up by the police from their home late on the evening of April 9. After being physically assaulted, the JCO was taken into custody.
“The mistreatment of an Indian Army Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) and his spouse while they were on leave has been handled seriously by army officials. In the middle of the night on April 9, 2025, the couple was taken from the JCO’s home by the Telhara police station in Bihar. The Indian Army’s Central Command, Surya Command, wrote on X that the JCO had been assaulted by the police and taken into custody.
The JCO was later freed after Army officials stepped in. The Director General of Police (DGP), Bihar, met with the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the local Army formation after taking prompt notice of the incident. The DGP suspended the Station House Officer (SHO) involved in the incident and declared an investigation at the Inspector General (IG) level.
“The JCO has subsequently been freed after police authorities acted quickly at the Army’s request. The local Army formation’s GOC met with the DG Police, Bihar, who promptly dismissed the SHO and mandated an investigation at the IG level, according to the Army.
An unbiased inquiry and action against the offenders were guaranteed by the Bihar DGP.
“The DGP Bihar has pledged complete cooperation in order to prosecute the offenders and guarantee an unbiased probe. The Army said that the Officer Commanding of the Army unit had visited the JCO and family at their home to check on their well-being in the meantime.
