After Tahawwur Hussain Rana, a major suspect in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, was extradited, External Affairs Minister Jaishankar on Friday thanked US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Bringing Rana to India 17 years after the incident, Jaishankar took to X to express gratitude for the US-India counterterrorism partnership.

“We value our two nations’ collaboration in the fight against terrorism. In response to Rubio’s statement, Jaishankar said, “This is definitely a significant step in guaranteeing justice for the victims of the 26/11 attacks.”

The extradition of Tahawwur Hussain Rana to India, where he will be charged for his involvement in the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks, was announced earlier in the day by US Secretary of State Rubio.

“We extradited Tahawwur Hussain Rana to India to face charges for his role in planning the horrific 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks,” Rubio stated in a post shared on X. We have long worked with India to bring justice to the 166 individuals who were killed in these atrocities, including six Americans. I’m happy that day has arrived.

One of the primary suspects in the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, Tahawwur Rana, was extradited to India from the United States on Thursday.

The extradition of convicted terrorist Tahawwur Hussain Rana has been referred to by the US Department of Justice as “a critical step” in the pursuit of justice for the victims of the horrific Mumbai terror attacks of 26/11.

In a statement released on April 10, 2025, the Department of Justice said that “Rana’s extradition is a critical step towards seeking justice for the six Americans and scores of other victims who were killed in the heinous attacks.”

According to a DoJ statement, Rana, 64, a Canadian citizen and native of Pakistan, was extradited to India to face ten criminal counts related to his alleged involvement in the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks.

In connection with his alleged role in the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks, Laskhar-e-Tayyiba (LeT), a proscribed terrorist group, has accused him with a number of charges, including conspiracy, murder, commission of a terrorist act, and forgery.

Years of persistent and coordinated efforts by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to apprehend the main conspirator behind the 2008 carnage resulted in the successful extradition of Rana.

The NIA said that Rana was being detained in US judicial custody as a result of extradition proceedings under the India-US Extradition Treaty. After Rana used every legal option to stop the transfer, the extradition was eventually completed.
