The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has received a letter from Signature View Apartments’ Resident Welfare Association (RWA) pleading with it to disburse the promised rent payments to tenants who have left their apartments.
Concerns have been voiced by the RWA over the building’s deteriorating state, which still puts the safety of the remaining families at danger. Citing structural safety issues, the DDA had already designated the 336-unit Signature View Apartments in Mukherjee Nagar, north Delhi, as a “dangerous building” and issued an e-tender for its destruction.
“We have informed the DDA in writing that the building’s condition is continuously declining. RWA president Amrender Singh Rakesh told PTI, “A lot of families are still residing here because they are uncertain if they will receive the rent assistance promised upon vacating.”
He said that noticeable fissures had developed on a number of walls and that pieces of concrete often fall from the ceilings. The DDA was unable to provide an instant answer.
The Delhi High Court ordered the DDA to make sure that rent assistance is given as soon as possible and that inhabitants leave the property within three months earlier in November 2024. The RWA said that the procedure had been postponed, nonetheless.
According to the RWA, a number of tenants continue to live in the building in challenging circumstances in spite of the hazards. The occupants have emailed the DDA to indicate their want to leave, but they are awaiting clarification on the steps and paperwork needed to turn over the apartments.
“People are still residing here more than a year after the building was deemed unsafe in November 2023,” Rakesh said. He noted that no rent has been paid so far, despite the fact that 111 households have left.
In a circular dated March 17, the DDA announced an e-tender for demolition work and provided standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the property’s evacuation.
Building demolition and the transportation of debris to an approved MCD disposal site will fall within the purview of the chosen organisation. The deadline for offers on the tender is April 14, as stated in the
round.
