In the 1940s when Indian cinema was witnessing many changes several different actresses tried their luck in the industry and one among them was Nimmi. While todays generation might not know her back then she had her own aura and actors wanted her to be a part of their films. Nimmi mesmerised everyone with her praiseworthy performances. During her career span of 16 years Nimmi did only 40 films. Despite not doing many films Nimmi grabbed everyones attention. The actress was born to Waheedan who also was an actress and courtesan. Waheedan had close links with cinema. However when Nimmi was 11 she lost her mother. Later the actress went to Abbottabad to live with her maternal grandparents. After the partition in 1947 Nimmi came to Mumbai with her family. The actress shared a close bond with director Mehboob Khan. After Nimmi came to Mumbai Mehboob called her to the sets of the film Andaz for her to understand how movies are made. During this time Nimmi met Raj Kapoor. The legendary actor was planning to direct Barsaat. His casting was done and he was only looking for a young actress. As soon as he saw Nimmi he immediately cast her opposite Prem Nath and from here Nimmis film career began. With her excellent performance in Barsaat Nimmi attracted so much attention from the people that a flood of films opened up for her. Nimmis performances over the years were hailed and fans wanted to see more of her roles in movies. You will be amazed to know Nimmi was one of the highest-paid actresses of her time. In an interview given in 2006 Nimmi herself revealed that she used to charge Rs 3 lakh for a film which was equal to the top male actors of that time. Nimmi did many films including Bawara with Raj Kapoor Saja and Andhiyan with Dev Anand Deedar and Daag with Dilip Kumar Shama Char Dil Char Rahen and all of them turned out to be blockbuster hits.
