Deep relationship between sleep and health: know how much and how sleep is necessary

Sleep is a natural part that has been researching for years. Although scientists have not fully understood it so far, there is no doubt that enough and quality sleep is very important for good health.

According to Dr. Rafael Pelio, a sleep specialist at Stanford University, sleep is our body's natural self-care process. On an average, 7 to 9 hours of sleep is considered ideal for adults. Getting more or less sleep than this can increase health risk, although every person's need to sleep may vary.

Quality is also necessary with the amount of sleep

Not only the amount of sleep, its quality is equally important. If you feel tired after waking up, it may indicate that your sleep is not comfortable enough. Good sleep is the one that you feel refreshed after getting up.

Age requirement of sleep

Sleep needs changing with age:

  • Newborns require about 14 to 17 hours of sleep.
  • Adults aged 26 to 64 usually have sufficient 7 to 9 hours of sleep.
  • Young adults may require a little more and the elderly may require little sleep.

Sleep phase and their importance

In overnight sleep we pass through different sleep stages every 90 minutes.

  • In the initial hours, we live in more deep sleep or "slow wave sleep", which helps in the body's repair and secretion of growth hormones.
  • In the second part of the night, we remain in sleep most of the time REM (Rapid Eye Movement), which is necessary to learn and strengthen memory.

Age and hormone effect on sleep

Sleep in childhood is deep, which starts decreasing during adolescence. During this time gender differences also come out.

  • Women usually get a little more sleep than men.
  • Pregnancy, menstruation, menopause and care responsibilities can affect their sleep.

Loss of sleep deficiency

Continuous lack of sleep can cause many problems:

  • Irritability
  • Trouble focusing
  • Change in mood

Lack of long -term sleep can have a serious effect on health, such as:

  • Depression
  • Heart disease
  • Immunity
  • Danger of diseases like Alzheimer's

If you feel tired even after getting enough sleep, it can be a sign of problems such as insomnia or sleep apnea. In such a situation it is necessary to consult a sleep specialist or doctor.
