New Delhi: Ayush Mhatre a 17-year-old Mumbai cricketer will reportedly replace Ruturaj Gaikwad on the Chennai Super Kings IPL 2025 roster. Cricbuzz reported on April 14th that Mhatre who debuted in first-class cricket for Mumbai against Rest of India in the 2024 Irani Cup will join the team shortly. He will join the squad in Mumbai in a couple of days a source close to CSK management was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz. The five-time champions announced their decision Saturday evening according to a report. He has been asked to join the franchise immediately but the earliest he can link up with the MS Dhoni-led squad is only a couple of days later. Mhatre with a base price of Rs 30 lakh was unsold in the auction Cricbuzz reported. The CSK nod came after the franchise called Mahtre to Chennai for trials along with a couple of others – Urvil Patel of Gujarat and Salman Nizar of Uttar Pradesh. Prithvi Shaw out of favour with the IPL teams currently was also in the reckoning but the team is understood to have picked Mahtre as a replacement for Gaikwad the report added. Since his debut last year Mhatre has participated in nine first-class and seven List A matches. Hes achieved two centuries in both red-ball and 50-over cricket. His most recent List A game saw him score 148 runs and take one wicket (33 runs from seven overs) against Saurashtra. Ruturaj Gaikwad of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) was sidelined for the rest of IPL 2025 after sustaining an elbow injury during a match against the Rajasthan Royals on March 30th. Following Gaikwads injury MS Dhoni assumed the captaincy. Despite Dhonis leadership CSK suffered a significant defeat against the Kolkata Knight Riders on April 11th scoring only 103 runs and losing by 8 wickets.
