Indian students in the US are facing a visa issue with ongoing issues of concern regarding the Optional Practical Training (OPT) program. Many have been alerted to minor previous offences that might lead to having their F-1 visa revoked and being deported immediately from the US. These offences, committed months or even years before, like shoplifting and driving under the influence, are now facing the suspension of their student status.

In addition to these issues, Indian students are also increasingly worried about their holiday travel plans as the uncertainty caused by the Trump administration's immigration policies raises new questions.

As per media reports, experts say several U.S. colleges have advised international students to stay put, warning that stricter visa norms could hamper their re-entry to the country.

The concern is due to the expected policy changes by the new U.S. administration, which will likely impose stricter immigration and visa policies. International students, particularly Indians, worry that a short visit back home might end their studies or work life.

One Indian student, who wished to remain anonymous, stated, "I am currently working in IT on Post-OPT after graduating last year with a master's degree in the U.S." "I’ve been accepted into a PhD program starting Fall 2025 and was planning to return to India for two months before resuming studies. But I’m now worried—many students like me are reportedly cancelling travel due to policy changes."

The student also raised questions about the potential consequences of re-entering the country with new I-20 paperwork in light of the changing immigration laws. “I’ve had no legal issues, no political activity, and a clean online record—but still, the uncertainty is making me think twice.”

While there’s no official travel ban for students, many universities are advising international students to stay in the U.S. until there’s more clarity.
