The USGS earthquake monitoring system reported that the tremor originated roughly 4 kilometers south of Julian, a small mountain town in San Diego County.

Although initial reports indicate no significant injuries or structural damage, residents across the region, from San Diego to as far north as Los Angeles felt the earth move, with many reporting swaying fixtures, rattling furniture, and brief moments of alarm.
