A 27-year-old American man was deported from Bali on Monday after a violent outburst at a local medical clinic that went viral on social media.
The man was removed from Indonesia via I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport, Jakarta Globe reported citing immigration authorities.
The incident occurred around 5 a.m. on April 12 and was captured on video and then widely circulated online.
The tourist was seen aggressively damaging property, including throwing furniture, tearing down curtains, and frightening other patients at the clinic, the South China Morning Post reported.
Authorities confirmed that he tested positive for a cannabis derivative and cocaine, although no drugs were found in his possession at the time of his arrest.
His actions were said to have threatened public order and violated immigration rules.
“We deeply regret and strongly condemn the actions of the tourist who disrupted a protected public space and endangered the safety of others,” said Governor Wayan Koster during a press conference on Monday.
Prior to his deportation, the man paid Rp35 million (US$2,087) in compensation to the clinic.
He had entered Indonesia on April 2 using a visa on arrival, valid until May 1.
In 2024, Bali welcomed 6.3 million international visitors, surpassing pre-pandemic levels, and aims to attract 6.5 million tourists this year.
In response to rising misbehavior among foreign visitors, Bali authorities have introduced new guidelines aimed at curbing disruptive actions and improving the island’s tourism image.
