Hong Kong actor Niklas Lam shared that he traveled to Shenzhen for a dental procedure due to the high cost in Hong Kong, which he says equals half a month’s food expenses.

According to SwampLam’s vlog about his tooth extraction went viral on social media. In the video, he explained that the cost of the procedure in Shenzhen was 70% cheaper than in Hong Kong.

“A tooth extraction in Hong Kong costs HK$700 (US$90),” he said. “If it’s an impacted wisdom tooth, you can’t leave the operating table without paying HK$5,000. And if surgery is required, you need to prepare HK$8,000.”

In contrast, Lam’s dentist in Shenzhen extracted two of his teeth in five minutes, with a total cost of just 630 yuan (US$86), he said.

Social media users flooded the comments section, expressing their shock at the high cost of living in Hong Kong. One user wrote: “The price difference is enough to buy a new phone.”

“No wonder my cousin goes to Shenzhen every week for groceries,” another commented.

Others seized the opportunity to criticize the declining wages at Hong Kong’s TVB broadcasting network, as Lam revealed last month that he had to juggle five part-time jobs to make ends meet.

Now 31, Lam made his acting debut in the 2018 drama “Rescue in the Dark.” He holds a degree in Social Work and Social Administration from the University of Hong Kong, graduating in 2017.
