Madhubala was one of the iconic actresses of her time. She left no stone unturned in enthralling fans during her era. While her life was celebrated for her power-packed performances she also made massive headlines for her personal life. In a heartfelt conversation with Filmfare Madhubalas sister Madhur Bhushan opened up about her personal life. She revealed Madhubalas tragic illness and the many ups and downs her journey had. While Madhubala was widely celebrated she fought a battle in silence. Madhur recalled the first time Madhubalas illness appeared in 1954 during the shooting of SS Vasan’s Bahut Din Huwe. She said “She spat out blood while brushing her teeth. Dilip saab flew in with Dr. Rustom Jal Vakil from Mumbai. He diagnosed that she had a hole in the heart (ventricular septal defect). Aapa appeared so healthy and beautiful. She found it hard to believe and so did others. She didn’t take it seriously. She kept on working and signed more films.” Despite being diagnosed with such a grave illness Madhubalas spirit for work did not die down and she signed more films. “She didn’t want to stop. She was at the peak of her career and she wanted to keep working” recalled Madhur. Madhubala was madly in love with Dilip Kumar. However the two had some misconceptions and were not on talking terms. During this time as well Madhubala suffered a lot of health crises and even fainted many times during shoots. After the heartbreak from Dilip Kumar Madhubala had a strong inclination towards Kishore Kumar with whom she had starred in popular films like Chalti Ka Naam Gadi and Half Ticket. The two grew close and wanted to get married. However it was Madhubalas father who asked her not to tie the knot in a hush-hush manner. However Madhubala in a fit of anger towards Dilip Sahab got married to Kishore Kumar. The marriage was emotionally charged but Kumar stood by her. She spent her final years largely bedridden quietly slipping away from the spotlight that had once cherished her.
