After conquering the Artificial Intelligence (AI) space with his ChatGPT AI chatbot OpenAI founder is reportedly planning to launch a social media network which will challenge market leaders like Elon Musk-led X (former Twitter) and Meta founder Mark Zuckerbergs Instagram photo-sharing platform.
Open AI secretly developing social media platform?
While details are scarce at present reports suggest that the social media platform is currently in early stages and is being secretly developed by Sam Altman-led OpenAI. As per media reports the company has developed an early prototype for internal testing which in focused on the image generation capabilities of its ChatGPT chatbot and also features a social feed akin to other social media platforms.
However whether OpenAI launches the social media site as a standalone app or integrates the platform into the ChatGPT app itself is not known yet.
Why is OpenAI entering social media space?
According to industry insiders OpenAI wants to cash-in on the image generation capabilities of its new image generator powered by GPT-4o which went live last month and allows users to create Studio Ghibli-inspired images with a simple prompt. ChatGPT offers Ghibli’s “house style” as a generative filter and it is speculated that OpenAI will integrate the feature in its new social media platform.
Ghibli-style images have taken social media by storm globally especially in India where the feature which allows users to transform any picture into a unique anime-style image has gone viral since its launch last month.
Notably in a an interview with TED last well Sam Altman stated that the user base of ChatGPT has doubled within the last few weeks especially since the launch of its new image-generation feature and one in ten people are using OpenAIs systems.
Earlier in February OpenAI had revealed that its weekly active users have surpassed 400 million while the number of business users has crossed the 2 million mark. OpenAIs ChatGPT is the fastest-growing web that reached 100 million monthly active users barely two months after its release.
Trouble for Zuckerberg
Meanwhile the rumors about OpenAI developing a new social media network to take on the likes of Musks X and Meta-powered Instagram and Facebook comes amidst an anti-trust lawsuit against Meta which accused the platform of monopolisng the social media space by acquiring smaller rivals.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is testifying in the historic anti-trust lawsuit that threatens to shred Metas $1.3 trillion business empire.
