Rarely Seen Operational Lapses- Four Gaps in Three Weeks Stay Unexplained

Since late March, UPI has gone through 4 outages. While 2 were due to the banking system overload, the other 2 were NPCI’s internal technical issues.

The most famous outage happened on 26 th March when there was hardware failure in NPCI switch.

They did express that some part of the document which contains Root Cause Analysis (RCA) is spread among the banks but is still kept under wraps for the public.

The central governing body seems to be changing policies and claimed that while some infrastructure enhancements are needed to be done, streams of service will be inevitably affected temporarily.

UPI’s Volume and Systemic Concerns

Facing challenges of greater scale, UPI has over 400 million unique users and processes an astounding 83% of all digital transactions in India:

Daily transactions: 550 million and more

Volume Monthly: 17-18 Billion

Typical transaction volume: 86% are below ₹500

Unlike traditional card systems that process payments on a batch mode for end-of-day reconciliation, UPI works in real-time, which requires uptime and choreography balance in the system to be a higher priority.

In every transaction there are typically six or more financial players that are directly or indirectly involved such as: banks, switches, TPAPs etc at a minimum. Each of these operators, notably blended across public and private sector banks, introduces diverse operational frameworks which in turn face different standards of service delivery and operational mixed performance enables deal across.

Action Coordination and Infrastructure Development

During these NPCI meetings, the institution raised the issue of attention being paid to fallback strategies and spanning pre-emptive service issue contingencies. The institution is keen on integrating new user services, but they are focused on ensuring that robust frameworks do not go offline.
