The ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) has been generating a lot of buzz, especially with the 18th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) happening simultaneously. The media in Pakistan often stirs debates comparing PSL to IPL, with journalists trying to provoke foreign players into commenting on which league is superior. After Australian cricket legend David Warner recently gave a strong rebuttal to a question comparing IPL and PSL, it was now the turn of England's Sam Billings to offer his perspective.
Billings Slams PSL vs IPL ComparisonSam Billings, who plays for Lahore Qalandars in PSL 2025 and has previously played under the leadership of MS Dhoni for Chennai Super Kings, was asked to compare the two leagues during a post-match press conference on April 15, 2025. His team had just defeated Karachi Kings in a comprehensive manner.
The Pakistani journalist's question was straightforward: Which league is better, IPL or PSL? Billings’ response left everyone stunned as he said, "You want me to say something stupid?" He then made it clear that comparing PSL to IPL was futile, explaining, "PSL is one of the most talked about T20 leagues in the world, but when it comes to the glamour and attraction of IPL, it does not stand anywhere. Not only PSL, no T20 tournament in the world comes in the category of IPL."
Billings went on to emphasize that all T20 leagues, including PSL, are aspiring to be the second-best league in the world after the IPL. He stated, "Like PSL, we are also trying to do the same in England, so that we can become the second best competition in the world. Big Bash (Australian T20 League) is also trying to do the same."
Warner’s Support for IPLThis wasn’t the first time a foreign cricketer had been asked to comment on the IPL-PSL comparison. Earlier, David Warner, captain of Karachi Kings, was asked if he had faced any trolling from Indian fans for playing in the PSL after going unsold in the IPL auction. Warner, in a calm and respectful manner, responded, saying that he was hearing this for the first time. He further clarified that his only focus was on playing cricket, and that he had never had the opportunity to play in PSL due to the international cricket schedule. Warner also made it clear that he was honored to play in the PSL this season.
Both Billings and Warner's comments serve as a reminder that the IPL's stature as the premier T20 league in the world remains unmatched, and they were quick to dismiss the attempts to pit these two leagues against each other.
