The Impact of AI on Music

Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman has shared his thoughts on the implications of artificial intelligence in the music industry, highlighting both its positive and negative aspects. He believes that without proper regulation, the situation could spiral into chaos. Rahman is open to embracing new technologies and has even utilized AI to recreate the voices of late artists Bamba Bakya and Shahul Hameed for the song 'Thimiri Yezhuda' from the film Lal Salaam, ensuring he had the necessary permissions from the families involved.

The acclaimed musician expressed concern over the rampant use of AI in music, stating, 'I don’t know what’s going to happen. Some of the songs are so filthy, yet they come out with the voices of popular singers. It needs to be controlled because if it’s not, there’ll be chaos.' He emphasized the necessity for ethical guidelines in the application of AI technology, noting that while it can empower those who have previously lacked opportunities, misuse can lead to detrimental outcomes.

Rahman, who boasts two Oscars, a Golden Globe, and a Grammy, likened irresponsible AI use to 'mixing poison with oxygen and breathing it in.' He advocates for establishing rules akin to societal ethics to govern behavior in the digital realm.

Currently, Rahman is gearing up for his highly anticipated 'The Wonderment Tour,' scheduled for May 3 at DY Patil Stadium. This concert, which he conceptualized in partnership with Percept Live, promises to be a spectacular event as part of the WAVES summit from May 1 to 4. Tickets are available through the Zomato app.

The 58-year-old artist has an exciting lineup of projects ahead, including the romantic film 'Tere Ishq Mein' with director Aanand L Rai, Mani Ratnam’s 'Thug Life,' Rajkumar Santoshi’s 'Lahore 1947,' a biopic on Meena Kumari, and a series on Gandhi directed by Hansal Mehta.

He is also set to collaborate again with Imtiaz after their previous project, 'Chamkila.' Rahman remarked on the joy of witnessing audiences embrace songs like 'Vida Karo' and 'Mirza,' which inspires him to recapture the essence of that era in his work.

Excited about the upcoming Gandhi series featuring Pratik Gandhi, Rahman described the project as unexpectedly beautiful, stating, 'Working with Hansal Mehta and Sameer Nair was fascinating. Gandhi ji’s life is like a textbook, a fantastic resource for both past and future generations to understand the father of the nation.' Recently, he attended the MAMI Film Festival 2025 in Mumbai.
