Jammu: On Wednesday night, an unexpected wave of severe winds and rain caused havoc in many areas of Jammu and Udhampur, uprooting trees, causing structural damage, and disrupting the power supply and road connections.
Strong gusts caused a portion of the Civil Secretariat’s perimeter wall in Jammu to fall, dragging barbed wire down with it.
The falling debris damaged a number of parked cars. To remove the debris and reopen the area, a JCB machine was sent in.
Widespread damage was also seen in the Udhampur area, where several trees were uprooted, seriously impeding road flow. Power outages were recorded at a number of locations around the district, and roads were obstructed in many locations.
Parshottam Gupta, the former Sarpanch of Sateni Panchayat in Udhampur, attested to the widespread destruction in his community. “After inspecting my Panchayat, I saw that a number of trees had been uprooted. The area’s energy and transportation have been impacted. The region has been impacted by such powerful winds after four to five years. Tomorrow morning, we’ll be able to evaluate the damage,” he said.
Disaster response teams are trying to restore critical services and guarantee road clearance in impacted regions, and authorities are anticipated to complete a comprehensive damage assessment by Thursday morning.
