He doesn’t have a fancy title and most people outside India don’t even know his name. But inside Reliance Industries Manoj Modi is one of the most important people working alongside Asia’s richest man Mukesh Ambani. Quiet low-profile and hardly ever seen in public Modi is known in India’s business world as Ambani’s right-hand man. He has been an important part of Reliance Industries since the early 1980s when the company was led by Dhirubhai Ambani the legendary founder. He began his journey at Reliance during those early days and gradually became one of the most trusted people in the Ambani family’s inner circle. Over time he has not only worked closely not just with Mukesh Ambani and his wife Nita Ambani but also with their next generation Akash and Isha Ambani.
One of Modi’s biggest contributions came in 2020 during a massive deal between Reliance’s Jio Platforms and Facebook. The deal worth USD 5.7 billion was a key moment for the company. This deal later opened the door for more investments bringing in a total of USD 13 billion from global private equity firms. These deals helped Reliance gain the attention of Silicon Valley.
