Weather update today: IMD issues orange alert for Delhi-NCR; heavy rainfall likely in northeast and east India

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Delhi-NCRforecasting thunderstorms and rain across the capital region today, April 12. Delhi recorded 0.7 mm of rainfall over the past 24 hours, with the minimum temperature settling at 19°Ctwo notches below the seasonal norm. The air quality index (AQI) stood at 119 this morning, placing it in the ‘moderate’ category, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).

The IMD also warned of heavy rainfall in several northeastern statesincluding West Bengal, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya. Widespread moderate rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds is likely over northeast and adjoining east India until April 16.

Scattered showers with thunderstorm activity are also expected across West, Central, and East India from April 12 to 14. A duststorm is likely in parts of Rajasthanwhile a thundersquall (50-60 kmph winds) is forecast for Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Rajasthan today.

Meanwhile, hot and humid conditions will prevail across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikaland heatwave conditions are expected over West Rajasthan and Gujarat on April 14–15with the possibility of severe heatwave pockets on April 16–17.
