According to a report from a leading news outlet, Japan is set to donate two Shinkansen train models—the E5 and E3 series—to India. This initiative aims to assist in the testing and inspection processes for the ongoing Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor.

The arrival of these trains in India is anticipated in early 2026. Upon their delivery, they will be equipped with inspection tools to gather operational data, as stated in the report.

The testing phase for these trains will also aid Japan in enhancing the design of the forthcoming E10 Shinkansen model, which is projected to debut in the early 2030s.

Understanding the E5 and E3 Models

The E5 series, created by East Japan Railway (JR East), has been operational since 2011 and can achieve speeds of up to 320 kilometers per hour. Initially, it was chosen for India's inaugural bullet train initiative.

The E3 series, which is slightly older, is mainly utilized for mini-Shinkansen services and is recognized for its safety features and comfortable travel experience.

While India initially intended to deploy E5 trains for passenger transport, delays and budget overruns prompted a change in strategy. The nation has now decided to pursue the more advanced E10 model, capable of reaching speeds of up to 400 kilometers per hour.

Utilizing the E5 and E3 trains for testing and inspection will provide India with essential experience in this technology ahead of the E10's rollout. Japan had previously contributed a first-generation Shinkansen to Taiwan for its high-speed rail system.
