Kanpur: A nursing student in Uttar Pradesh's Kanpur, attempted suicide after not being allowed to sit for back exams as she was unable to pay extra college fees on Thursday. The student attempted to burn herself at the college gate. The police present on the spot saved the student from taking the extreme step. There was a commotion in the college campus after the incident. The student has been identified as Aarohi.

How The Incident Unfolded?

The student reached the college gate with a bottle of petrol. The student alleged that the college management had demanded Rs 2,000 more than the prescribed fee.

A video of Aarohi crying unconsolably saying that she was stopped from giving her back exam has surfaced. "Exam nahi dene diya, mera form nahi fill kar ke bheja college se," Aarohi can be heard saying. Which roughly translates to "I was not allowed to sit for the exam and my form was not filled and sent from the college."

Reportedly, three months ago, around a dozen students including Aarohi had raised their voice against this additional fee. At that time, the college management had assured all the students that their back paper forms would be filled on time. But, when the time for the examination came, it was found that only the victim's form had not been submitted.

Three days ago, when the student did not receive the admit card, she contacted the college administration, on which a heated argument broke out between the two parties. Despite this, the management had promised to allow the student to appear in the examination. But, when the examination began on Thursday, the student was stopped from entering the examination hall.

Heartbroken by this, the student attempted self-immolation at the college gate. Her friends present there, understanding the seriousness of the situation, immediately called the police. The police rushed to the spot and took the student in their custody and took her to the police station.

There was a long discussion between the student's family and the college management in the police station, but no solution could be found.

After this, the disappointed family left for the District Magistrate's office with a complaint.

Police Reaction

Kanpur police reacting to the incident took on micro-blogging website X and said, "On receiving information from the control room, the local police and PRV reached the spot and gathered information. The case was found to be related to the disagreement between the student and the school management regarding the fee dispute in Sai College. Both the parties were called to the police station and talks were held. The situation is normal at the spot."
