A photo shared on Weixin shows two women lying in the middle of the highway in Japan to pose for photos, after traffic was stalled due to an accident.
Two female tourists from China have sparked online outrage after lying down on a highway where a road accident had occurred in Japan to pose for photos.
One of the women, known by her social media handle @Dongjingfacaitu, posted a video showing herself and her friend lying and sitting for photos in the middle of the Tokyo-Fujisan Expressway, where a road accident had occurred, injuring many foreign tourists and causing traffic jams, the South China Morning Post reported.
The accident led to the closure of the road for several hours to facilitate rescue operations, leaving cars stuck in long queues.
Taking advantage of the traffic situation, the women lay down in the procession of cars, posed for pictures, sat down, and drank whiskey.
The woman who posted the video explained that they missed the chance to see Mount Fuji on a clear, sunny day, but added “they had our life photos taken on the highway.”
Her post quickly went viral on social media, prompting a wave of criticism, including calls for the woman to be repatriated.
One netizen commented, “Their actions have harmed others,” while another stated, “Japan should forcibly repatriate that woman.”
Others called the act “naive” and questioned how such behavior could occur at the scene of an accident.
The video was eventually deleted amid the controversy.
Japanese lawyer Hiroshi Mizogami said that the women’s actions were dangerous, according to Fuji News Network.
Under Japan’s Road Traffic Act, lying, sitting, or standing on the road in a way that obstructs traffic is prohibited, and violators can face fines of up to 500,000 yen (US$3,500).
