A man alleged to have opened fire at Florida State University was found with a handgun, police have said. A law enforcement official told CNN a gun was also found in the university's student union building and another in a car used by the suspect.

The shooting reportedly happened on the campus in Tallahassee at about lunchtime local time on Thursday (April 17). The university urged students to take shelter after it was reported the shooter was in the student union area.

The suspect is in custody. There were initial reports at least four people were hospitalised, but the figure was later revised up to six.

One of those six people was said to be fighting for their life, with the remainder said to be in a serious condition. US media has reported that at least one person was killed.
