Marseille are set to organise a legends match on the eve of their 125-year anniversary at Stade Velodrome, and several football legends who have represented the French heavyweights are set to return to the pitch for the occasion.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Les Phoceens will celebrate their 125th anniversary with a special legends match on Friday, May 2, 2025. Former players from various eras of the club’s storied history, such as Didier Drogba, Robert Pires, and Samir Nasri, among others, are expected to feature in the game. The match will bring together iconic figures from the 1972 double-winning team, the early ’90s, the centenary squad, the 2010 Ligue 1 champions, and stars from memorable European campaigns in 2004 and 2018.
DID YOU KNOW?
Interestingly, fans will have the opportunity to vote online for the starting XI of each legends team, with over 100 former players expected to participate.
WHAT NEXT FOR MARSEILLE?
It has been a topsy-turvy season for Marseille, who have been impressive in Ligue 1 despite issues between head coach Roberto De Zerbi and English forward Mason Greenwood. In recent times, the Italian has been criticised for Les Olympiens’ poor run of form as they look to seal qualification for next year’s Champions League. They will face Montpeiller on Saturday, April 19, in their upcoming fixture.
