Tanvi Khanna, an Indian squash player, surprised the world Thursday by upsetting Hong Kong’s top seed, N Ching Cheng, in the first round of the World Championship Qualifying Event (Asia).
The 134th-ranked Tanvi overcame the 76th-ranked Hong Kong player 3-1 (11-7, 11-8, 8-11, 12-10) to go to the quarterfinals.
In the round of eight, she will face Hong Kong’s Helen Tang (ranked 97th in the world). In another first-round match, top-seeded Indian player Anahat Singh (No. 63) comfortably beat Jemyca Aribado (No. 126) of the Philippines 3-0 (11-4, 11-5, 11-7). In the quarterfinals, Anahat will face Akari Midorikawa, a Japanese opponent.
In order to advance to the quarterfinals, second-seeded Akanksha Salunkhe (No. 70) defeated lower-ranked Risa Sugimoto of Japan 3-0 (11-4, 11-3, 11-8) to face sixth seed Wai Yhann Au Yeong of Singapore. Veer Chotrani, who is rated 63rd in the world, advanced to the quarterfinals of the men’s tournament after defeating Ong Sai Hung, a Malaysian opponent who is ranked lower, 3-0 (11-7, 11-8, 14-12). In the last eight, he will face Muhammad Syafiq Kamal, another Malaysian.
