As West Bengal rings in the Bengali New Year, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a spell of rain and thunderstorms across several districts this weekend, ringing rain and relief to the heat stricken region.

In Kolkata, the IMD has indicated the possibility of thunderstorms in the city by evening or night on Friday.

Areas such as Medinipur, Jhargram, Paschim Bardhaman, Purulia, and Birbhum are likely to experience rain starting with the unsettled weather expected to continue through Friday to Sunday.

The IMD has also warned of gusty winds reaching speeds of 30 to 40 kmph across parts of South Bengal.

Respite for other states too

Elsewhere in the country, rain and thunderstorms are expected to impact several regions over the next few days.

States such as Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Gangetic West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura are likely to witness heavy rainfall and storm activity on Friday.

Strong winds, lightning, and hail are also expected to affect parts of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Jharkhand, and the northeastern states. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are likely to see consistent rainfall through the end of the week, with moderate to heavy showers forecast especially in the Nicobar region by Friday, as well.

Looking ahead to Saturday, the IMD predicts continued thunderstorms with gusty winds and possible hail across parts of Uttarakhand, West Bengal & Sikkim, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, and Karnataka.

Scattered thunderstorms will also persist across other central and eastern states including Odisha, Bihar, and Jharkhand.

Heatwave conditions grip Rajasthan & Central India

While several parts of the country prepare for showers, Rajasthan is currently experiencing isolated heatwave conditions.

Meanwhile, hot and humid weather is expected to persist across Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada, adding to the discomfort in central India.

The IMD has advised residents in these regions to take necessary precautions and stay hydrated as temperatures remain high.

As weather conditions remain volatile across various parts of the country, the IMD continues to monitor developments closely. Citizens are advised to follow official updates and exercise caution, particularly in regions affected by thunderstorms and strong winds.
