New Delhi: Following reports of Abhishek Nayars contract termination by the BCCI Indian leg-spinner Varun Chakaravarthy expressed support for the former all-rounder via an Instagram story. Chakaravarthy was the only prominent current Indian player to publicly react to the news.
Following reports that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had ended Abhishek Nayars contract as Indias assistant coach Varun Chakravarthy a current member of the Indian cricket team was the first to publicly acknowledge the situation via an Instagram post.
Nayar and Varun were long-time members of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) organization before collaborating on an Indian project last year. Varun gained widespread recognition after joining KKR in 2020 while Nayars involvement began in 2018 when he became the head of the KKR academy.
KKR twice re-signed Varun before the major IPL auctions due to his consistent performance. Varun and Nayar were both part of the team that won the previous IPL season with Nayar praised for fostering a positive team atmosphere.
Following offers to join the Indian national team VVS Laxman and Gautam Gambhir departed from their roles with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Gambhir assumed the head coach position after Rahul Dravids departure while Laxman became the assistant coach.
After rejoining the Indian team last year alongside Gambhir and Nayar leg-spinner Varun Chakravarthy experienced a successful return to white-ball cricket attributing his success to Nayars guidance. Since his comeback match against Bangladesh he has taken 31 wickets in 12 T20 Internationals. This strong performance led to his inclusion in Indias Champions Trophy squad where he added another 10 wickets to his tally.
Varuns Instagram story though lacking a caption or further information implied a close relationship between him and the ex-cricketer.
After only eight months Vikram Nayar was dismissed from his coaching position. He was reportedly notified of the termination last week. Indias recent home losses to New Zealand and the underwhelming batting performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia are cited as the primary reasons for his removal.
Forty-one-year-old former all-rounder Stuart Nayar a prominent domestic cricketer with 103 first-class matches to his name played three One Day Internationals.
