3 heroes and 3 zeroes from the MI vs SRH contest in IPL 2025
News Update April 18, 2025 05:29 PM

Mumbai Indians handed Sunrisers Hyderabad their 5th defeat of the Indian Premier League 2025 season. The match at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai saw the hosts restrict SRH to a score of 162/5 in 20 overs. MI then got the job done (166/6) in 18.1 overs. The win sees MI get to 7th in the points table. After the halfway stage mark, MI own 3 wins and 4 defeats. On the other hand, SRH own 5 defeats and 2 wins. SRH are currently placed 9th in the IPL 2025 standings.

SRH openers Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head added 59 runs for the opening wicket. However, credit to MI for not letting the two off the hook. They were instead kept quiet. SRH scored only 46 runs in the powerplay. SRH added another 13 runs before Hardik Pandya dismissed Abhishek. Ishan Kishan and Head followed Abhishek back to the pavilion moments later, scoring 82/3 after 11.1 overs. Nitish Reddy (19), Heinrich Klaasen (37) and Aniket Verma (18*) helped SRH get to 162/5.

It wasn’t the fluent wicket expected at this venue but a rather tricky one as SRH didn’t get the momentum. For MI, Will Jacks claimed 2 wickets for 14 runs. Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult were sound and effective.

In response, MI saw Rohit Sharma score a 26-run knock off 16 balls. Ryan Rickelton (31), Jacks (36), Suryakumar Yadav (26), Tilak Varma (21*), and Hardik Pandya (21) did enough as the collective batting helped MI get past SRH’s score. Pat Cummins and Eshan Malinga shared 5 scalps between them. Harshal Patel grabbed another.

Here are three heroes and three zeroes from the MI-SRH contest in Mumbai.

Heroes

Jasprit bumrah: The speedster came to the fore for MI. The speedster was solid in the power play, conceding just 10 runs from his 2 overs. He bowled the 16th over next and gave away only 7 runs. The 19th over of the SRH’s innings and Bumrah’s last was his vintage self. A wicket and 4 runs conceded was terrific stuff. Notably, he dismissed the dangerous Klaasen. Bumrah’s 4-over spell saw him give away 21 runs. He conceded 5.25 runs an over. He bowled 8 dot balls and was hit for a solitary four in the contest.

Will Jacks: A nice all-round show from MI’s Jacks saw him win the Man of the Match award. Jacks claimed two scalps with the ball for 14 runs from three overs. 9 of the 18 deliveries he bowled were dots. He was smashed for a solitary four with his economy rate being 4.66. His wickets were those of Travis Head and Ishan Kishan. Jacks then came in when MI were 32/1 after Rohit’s dismissal. He was part of two quality stands with Ryan Rickelton and Suryakumar Yadav. Jacks ended up with a neat 36 from 26 balls. He hit three fours and two sixes, striking at 138.46.

Pat Cummins: The SRH skipper made his presence felt with a sturdy display. Cummins hit a six in his knock of 8* from 4 balls, helping SRH get past 160. And then with the ball, he was sensational, picking three MI wickets. A low full-toss from Cummins had Rohit dismissed. In the 13th over, he picked Suryakumar’s wicket before he got Jacks in the 15th over. Cummins clocked 3/26 from 4 overs (ER: 6.50). Notably, he bowled 13 dot balls and gave away 3 fours and a six. The former KKR pacer has raced to 70 IPL wickets from 65 games at 31.07 (ER: 8.89).

Zeroes

Ishan kishan: The century Kishan got in SRH’s opener this season seems a distant memory now. He has been woeful since then, posting scores worth 0, 2, 2, 17, 9* and 2. This was a solid chance for Kishan to show his former side some sheen and character, but it was a dud performance with the willow for SRH’s number three. As per ESPNcricinfo, a floated ball on length outside off spun away past Kishan’s bat as he came down the track for an inside-out shot. He missed a connection, and wicketkeeper Rickelton did the rest. Kishan faced three balls for his 2 runs. His wicket saw SRH get reduced to 68/2.

Nitish Kumar Reddy: Another sheepish performance from Nitish Kumar Reddy, who is yet to show why SRH retained him. Reddy has a lot of starts this season, but he has thrown them away. The 19-run knock versus MI came off 21 balls. It was a laboured show with his strike rate being 90.47. He managed to hit a single four in this contest. Trent Boult ended his stay in the 17th over as SRH lost their 4th scalp for 113 runs. A cross-seam half-volley from Trent Boult saw Reddy get deep in the crease and tried to go squarer. He was caught out.

Zeeshan Ansari: A weak performance from SRH’s Zeeshan Ansari didn’t go unnoticed. He was highly expensive, giving away 35 runs from 3.1 overs. He was smashed for three sixes and two fours. He conceded at 11.05. Ansari bowled 8 dot balls in his spell. SRH needed a sound performance from Ansari after a modest score on the board, but the player failed to make any inroads. He was also seen bowling a wide and a no-ball. The leg-spinner bowling a no-ball summed up his presence.
