The new AI speed cameras catching out thousands of drivers across UK

New being trialled across the UK have already caught out thousands of motorists, according to recent data. Figures from released last month showed that over 2,300 drivers had been caught out using the AI software since 2021.

The cameras are not like traditional with the tools designed to see inside vehicles. The AI software can even pick up individuals using their phones behind the wheel and not wearing a seatbelt. Five police forces currently use the AI cameras with software rolled out across Durham, Humberside, North Wales, Staffordshire and London.

Forces in Avon and Somerset and Devon and Cornwall are also set to trial the new cameras shortly.

Rhydian Jones, car insurance expert, said: "That's why the piloting of AI speed cameras is a step in the right direction to improve road safety.

"The technology can spot drivers and passengers not wearing a seatbelt or using their phone behind the wheel. The hope is that this will really help to crack down on drivers who risk the safety of themselves and other road users when behind the wheel."

Figures released earlier this year show 849 traffic offences were picked up during a two-week trial of the new technology last year.

According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, the figures released in January were obtained by through a Freedom of Information request. The latest statistics showed 533 drivers

Furthermore, a whopping 301 road users were found using . Meanwhile, 13 drivers found road users were not in proper control of their vehicles.

Ian Robertson, a spokesperson for Safer Roads Humber (SRH)

He said: "At Safer Roads Humber, we are always looking at ways to make our roads safer and prevent death and serious injuries.

"It is disappointing that so many road users chose to use their phones or not wear their seatbelt in our area, putting themselves and others at risk.

"The use of new technology is important to change road user behaviour to reduce casualties as far as possible, whilst working alongside traditional methods."
