Born on February 3 1938 in a traditional Muslim family Actress Waheeda Rehman was passionate about dancing and got professionally trained in Indian classical form Bharatanatyam along with her sisters. At the age of 17 she featured as a dancer in her debut film Rojulu Marayi. After Raj Khoslas Pyaasa released Waheeda Rehman became an overnight sensation at the age of 19. Following that she appeared in a series of successful projects including Solva Saal Kaagaz Ke Phool Kala Bazar Chaudhvin Ka Chand Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam Bees Saal Baad Guide Patthar Ke Sanam Ram Aur Shyam Neel Kamal Khamoshi Reshma Aur Shera Kabhi Kabhie Namkeen Chandni Lamhe and many more. Waheeda Rehman wanted to be a doctor instead of actress Waheeda Rehman once revealed that she never aspired to be an actress. She wanted to be a doctor as it was considered a respectable profession in Muslim families. In a conversation with Tweak India the veteran actress shared I wanted to become a doctor because in those days for Muslim families medicine was the only respectable profession. I used to make faces looking in the mirror. When my father asked why do I do this I said I want to make people laugh and cry. Many might be unaware that Waheeda Rehmans family was against her marriage to actor Shashi Rekhi commonly known by his stage name Kamaljeet. After her relationship with Guru Dutt ended she fell in love with Shashi Rekhi who is popular for his performances in films like Son of India Shagoon Heer Ranjha and more. When Salim Khan advised Waheeda Rehman on marriage Waheeda Rehman was in distress after her family disapproved of her relationship with Shashi Rekhi. During this difficult phase it was Salman Khans father and veteran screenwriter Salim Khan who advised her to follow her heart and keep all the noises aside. Waheeda Rehman took his advise and went against her family to marry the love of her life. In 1974 she tied the knot with Shashi and became parents to children- Sohail Rekhi and Kashvi Rekhi. For the unversed Shashi Rekhi passed away from an undisclosed cause on November 21 2000.
