In an effort to prevent similar mistakes in the future, the Uttar Pradesh Social Welfare Department is creating a list of the officers who made incorrect verifications in the old age pension plan. This action was taken in response to a senior citizen’s personal complaint regarding the suspension of his pension to Social Welfare Minister Asim Arun. The department took remedial action after an examination found errors in the verification report.
The agency is now vetting the recipients of 61 lakh old-age pensions. Two significant disparities have been identified: income tax-paying persons obtaining benefits under the plan and pensions of eligible elderly adults being incorrectly discontinued owing to erroneous verifications. To guarantee that only worthy recipients get pensions, the government is attempting to address these problems.
After May 25, the responsible authorities will face severe consequences. In order to avoid future failures of this kind, measures are also being made to remove dead beneficiaries from the pension lists.
Beginning in June, the government will also start paying out Rs 1,000 in pensions every three months to those who were identified as part of the Zero Poverty Campaign. The state government increased the Old Age/Farmer Pension Scheme budget by Rs 728 crore, from Rs 7,377 crore in 2024–2025 to Rs 8,105 crore in 2025–2026, to meet the growing number of beneficiaries.
According to Kumar Prashant, Director of Social Welfare, a list of officials who filed false verification reports is being compiled, and they will face severe consequences.
