In a solemn gesture, players from Sunrisers Hyderabad and Mumbai Indians will don black armbands during their IPL clash on Wednesday, which will also see the absence of cheerleaders and fireworks. This decision comes in response to the tragic terrorist attack in Pahalgam that resulted in 26 fatalities.
Both teams will take a moment to observe a minute of silence to honor the victims of this incident, which has sparked widespread international outrage.
A source from the BCCI confirmed, "The players will wear black armbands and observe a minute's silence in memory of those who lost their lives in the Pahalgam attack in Kashmir."
Additionally, the source mentioned, "To show respect, there will be no cheerleaders present during the MI vs SRH match, and no fireworks will be set off."
The attack occurred when terrorists opened fire on civilians at a popular tourist destination in southern Kashmir, resulting in numerous casualties and injuries.
The Resistance Front (TRF), linked to the banned Pakistan-based terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), has claimed responsibility for this heinous act, which has been met with strong condemnation globally.
The BCCI also released a statement denouncing the "ghastly and cowardly" attack.
"The cricketing community is profoundly shocked and saddened by the tragic loss of innocent lives in the brutal terror attack at Pahalgam yesterday," stated BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia.
"On behalf of the BCCI, I strongly condemn this cowardly act and extend our heartfelt condolences to the grieving families, along with prayers for the departed souls. We stand united in this moment of tragedy," he added.
Following the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, the Indian cricket team halted bilateral cricket with Pakistan and recently declined to tour for the Champions Trophy, leading the ICC to arrange for a neutral venue in Dubai.
